San Marcos, Texas — The San Marcos Civil Air Patrol squadron was on Thursday named the 2016 Texas Wing Squadron of Merit. The award, eligible to any squadron with a cadet program, is given for high marks across a number of metrics including membership growth and retention, cadet milestone achievements, and the number of cadets who participate in flying activities.

The skies over San Marcos were filled with aircraft from the Civil Air Patrol on Saturday as five teams from around the state competed in the second annual Texas Wing Aircrew Competition. The three-person crew from Group 3, which encompasses Dallas, Irving and Waco, took home the trophy after a hectic day of flying, inspections and tests.

Aircrews made of up volunteers from all around the state will once again descend upon San Marcos Regional Airport later this month. The teams will be participating in the Civil Air Patrol's second annual Texas Wing Flight Competition, with the winners taking home a year's worth of bragging rights and a very large trophy.

City Manager Jared Miller was honored by the local Civil Air Patrol unit on Monday. The ceremony, held at the San Marcos Regional Airport, was put together to thank Mr. Miller, his staff, and the city for their support of the squadron over the past two decades.

It was certainly a night to remember for one local Civil Air Patrol cadet. Standing in front of his peers, Cadet Chuck Baker had his new rank pinned onto his shoulders by his mother and father, listened to squadron leaders talk about his character, and was given a Texas state flag that flew over the capitol by Texas State Representative Jason Isaac. There was cake, too.

Although taking home a Quality Cadet Unit Award was a great moment for members of the David Lee "Tex" Hill Composite Squadron, their participation at the joint conference for Southwest Region and Texas Wing, along with a CAP Board of Governors meeting, afforded them moments that won't soon be forgotten.

Three Texas Wing cadets and the wing's director of cadet programs appeared before Civil Air Patrol's Board of Governors this morning in San Antonio to give moving and inspirational testimonials regarding the impact of CAP's Cadet Programs on their lives.

A group of young aviation enthusiasts received a special visit today from the Austin Police Department's Air Support Unit. Three APD officers dropped by the weekly Civil Air Patrol meeting in San Marcos, arriving by Air 1, the newest of three helicopters in the APD fleet.

Two officers of the David Lee "Tex" Hill Composite Squadron took home Texas Wing awards on Monday. Lieutenant Colonel Richard Ferguson, the Deputy Commander for Cadets, was awarded as Cadet Programs Officer of the Year, while Major Matthew Congrove, Squadron Commander and Public Affairs Officer, was selected as the Texas Public Affairs Officer of the Year.
